Red light for Mater proposal down to skyline fears

THE HEIGHT, bulk, scale and mass of the proposed children’s hospital of Ireland on the already elevated Mater site in Dublin “would have a profound negative impact on the appearance and visual amenity of the city skyline”, according to An Bord Pleanála. In what An Taisce described as “one of the most significant planning decisions in its history”, the board refused permission for the €650 million scheme, saying it would result in a “dominant, visually incongruous structure” in the northside Georgian core.
